Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular natural attractions in the United States, with millions of people visiting it every year.
Located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, Yosemite National Park was established on October 1, 1890, after Congress approved the third national park in the United States’ park system.
Native Americans have long lived in Yosemite Valley, which is located right in the middle of this park. When gold was discovered in California, new settlers settled in the area in 1849, damaging the ecosystem of the valley. To protect the valley from further damage, President Abraham Lincoln declared it a protected area in 1864. This was the first time in American history that land was set aside for conservation.
Conservation campaign
But even this government move could not stop California’s lucrative cattle industry from grazing in the pastures around Yosemite Valley. When the famous conservationist John Mayer first came to this area in 1868, he liked the natural beauty here. He went back and started writing about the increasing losses due to sheep grazing.
His writings spread awareness of the cause of conservation and increased public support for it. He, along with other naturalists, campaigned for the greater Yosemite Valley to be included in the National Park to protect it. As a result, on October 1, 1890, Congress designated more than 3,800 hectares of the valley surrounding the park as a national park.
In 2016, a non-profit conservation fund donated 162 hectares of additional land to the park. This is the largest expansion to the park in nearly 70 years.
